Useful Winter Advice for Motorists and Homeowners

Tagged Under : Motorists, Motorists Homeowners

Financial advisory service, myfinances.co.uk, has compiled a useful collection of tips to help householders and motorists during the winter months.

For motorists, one of the main pieces of advice is to fit winter tyres, as these can help enormously in coping with snowy and icy driving conditions.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) says that car insurance premiums are unlikely to be affected by fitting winter tyres. It does, however, remind motorists that they should still avoid driving in treacherous conditions.
Myfinances.co.uk also advises motorists to take simple but necessary measures such as ensuring windows are always clear of ice or snow to ensure you are not breaking the law by driving with an obstructed view.

Tips for Homeowners

For householders, the website has some equally useful advice. Insulation, it says, can help reduce the risks of pipes freezing – which can often lead to them bursting.

If a pipe does freeze over, the advice is to turn the mains water off, and all the taps on. Thawing the pipe should be carried out using a hairdryer, if possible and safe; or by tying a hot water bottle to the pipe using a towel.

If you are planning to go away at any point during the winter, the advice is to keep the heating on low so as to help prevent pipes from freezing.
