Nine out of ten Britons using social media at least once a week have been asked to connect online with someone they have never met, and over half have accepted these requests, according to Legal General’s latest CyberSafety report.
Nearly two thirds of those who have connected with people they dont know have done so because they have a friend in common; one-third accepted strangers because they were members of the same group, and one in ten assumed they must know the stranger somehow.
However, the insurer warns that this lax attitude to social networking is putting social media users at risk of increasingly sophisticated cyber crime.

Financial advisory service, myfinances.co.uk, has compiled a useful collection of tips to help householders and motorists during the winter months.
For motorists, one of the main pieces of advice is to fit winter tyres, as these can help enormously in coping with snowy and icy driving conditions.

Myfinances.co.uk also advises motorists to take simple but necessary measures such as ensuring windows are always clear of ice or snow to ensure you are not breaking the law by driving with an obstructed view.
Tips for Homeowners

Those affected by flooding following the heavy rain that has afflicted parts of Scotland have been advised to contact their insurer with all haste by the ABI (Association of British Insurers).
Director of General Insurance Nick Starling described the flooding as precisely the sort of reason that insurance was designed for.
Starling added that insurers would have plans in place to minimise the stress and inconvenience policyholders face.
Most insurers will have 24 hour hotlines, and if any temporary emergency repairs are needed to prevent further damage occurring the insurer should be informed and receipts kept.
The ABI also advises that damaged goods should not be immediately thrown away (unless a hazard to health) as they may be repairable.
When floods are forecast valuable goods should be shifted to a higher floor and a list of emergency contact numbers kept in a safe place.
The advice mirrors that which the ABI gave in October, when flooding affected Northern Ireland, Wales and south-west England.
